In last Thursday’s Dolphins game the Panthers scored a touchdown and were flagged for a personal foul after the play. The refs said the penalty would be assessed on the ensuing kickoff and it was. However, it was the Panther's intention to go for two on the extra point and they were successful from the two/three yard line. Could the Dolphins have accepted the penalty on the try thus backing the Panthers up fifteen yards and almost ensuring they would go for one rather than two? – J. D.
Good question. I had the same thought for a few seconds. But then I remembered rule 14-1-9 (Exception) that states: "If the scoring team commits a dead ball foul after a score, the score counts and the penalty is enforced on the kickoff." As a result, any foul by the scoring team that occurs from the time of the score until the whistle for the Try will be assessed on the kick-off with no option for the try.
I would note that in the NCAA, the offended team has the choice of taking the penalty on the try or on the kick-off. (Rule 10-2-5 (c)).
Good to see that someone is watching games other than just those involving the Giants.
