The Giants have gotten back on the winners list. It wasn’t flashy, but they got the job done. There is still a lot of room for improvement, but this team is getting a little better each week. There is a lot of football yet to play, but the next five games are each very winnable, followed by what will be a tough battle in Minnesota. A playoff berth is certainly achievable, if the team is good enough. There is a good chance the Giants will be playing the best football right at the end of the season, which gives us a good shot at a playoff run. I think this team is going to surprise some people. – Peter M.
Peter, with any luck by the time they get to Minnesota, the Vikings will have clinched and will be mailing it in. (Did I just really say that?)
For those who say Eli is a bum and a big reason for this teams failure STOP IT PLEASE! 2. Is this the worst Giant defense in recent memory or what? – Chris H.
It hasn’t been pretty, that’s for sure. Strangely, enough, this defense has ranked t or near the top of the heap overall for most of the season, so go figure.
The last time I wrote to you that Sheridan and his prevent mentality had to go you called my suggestion as hysterical. If the same players as last year havent lost how to play the game it points to Sheridan. Michael Johnson still looks lost and someone needs to put these people in the proper spot on the field to be able to execute unless you expect Eli to throw for 400 yards every game. If you do then we would be the Eagles. Something is going on with the lack of a running game as well. These are dark days as I think Coughlin is reluctant to change anything in season. Lots of luck.-- Lenny W.
Lenny, I think the last time I urged you to give Sheridan some time. He’s a rookie coordinator. Also, it’s not the same players as last year. You’re missing Phillips, you missed Ross for most of the season. You have a new LB in Boley; Pierce is now out, Canty was missing most of the season, etc. So you can’t compare apples to apples here, though I will agree that Sheridan has to learn to do a better job with making adjustments.
Pat, it amazes me how many people feel Jacobs is this key cog for the giants. They rant about his yards per carry avg. and say he should receive the ball more. Yet when I look at the games and I have almost every game record for the last 5 years, I see Jacobs kill so many drives because he can't pick up 3rd and 1's. There are so many times when we kick field goals because he can't get into the endzone. Manning has never thrown less than 21 td's in any season yet consistently the giants have problems in the red zone, figure it out. – Kevin L.
Kevin, ask yourself if the short yardage issues are all Jacobs’ fault or if the blocking in front of him has something to do with it. I can tell you that for this year, at least three of his blockers are playing with injuries that I’ve suspected are affecting their play, Not saying Jacobs is blameless, but in poking around, some of the failed short yardage situations are not his fault.
I am getting worried about all the "talk" from Giants' players offering excuses and reasons why the defense has failed, consistently, in the last 4 games. I do realize they are responding to questions being asked, but I was much more comfortable when this team had a motto along the lines of: " Talk is cheap. Play the game! " Let the coaches figure out the reasons for failures and let them do what they can with the players to correct them. But the players need to get out of this excuse making, and just play the damn game. Here's hoping for a long run of success. By the way, I read some encouraging words about Vince Anderson and the other practice squad safety (Shareff?). Any chance of activation? Do we need worry about losing them, now that the word has gotten out? – Ted M.
Ted, if Shareff and Anderson were that good, I would have thought someone would have scooped them up by now based on the preseason play. As far as the players making excises, that’s not what they’re doing. They’re offering aperspective on what’ss going on, and a a member of the media, I appreciate whatever insight they’re able to give.
