A few days ago, Michael M. said, "I'd like to put to rest..." our ongoing discussion about Kevin Boss's injury and concussions in general. Well, Mike didn't put it to rest. His definitions of concussions are 30 to 40 years old. Over that period of time, there has been a great amount of research and new forms of treatment for concussions.
The current definition of concussion is: "A trauma induced alteration in mental status that may or may not be accompanied by a loss of consciousness." (JAMA, Vol. 282 No.24 Dec 22, 1999.)
Since Boss said that he saw "flashing lights," he certainly did have a concussion. Why the Giants denied that, I have no idea. They are among 20 NFL teams now using ImPACT, a program that helps in the definition and determination of an athelete's progress toward recovery. I'm sure this procedure must've been used in determining Boss's ability to come back against the Eagles.
ImPACT helps guide the doctors and athletic trainers through a systematic approach to returning to play: 1. Removal from the game following any signs/symptoms of concussion. 2. Not return to play in the game. 3. Medical evaluation following the injury. a.) Rule out more serious intracranial pathology. b.) Neuropsychological Testing considered "cornerstone" or proper post-injury assessment. 4. Stepwise return to play a.) Rest & no activity until asymptomatic b.) Light aerobic exercise c.) Sport-specific training d.) Non-contact drills e.) Full-contact drill f.) Game play. For more specific articles and definitions of concussion treatment, I suggest you try: www.impacttest.com – Jim V.
Jim, with all due respect, I think your opinion that Boss definitely had a concussion is going to draw criticism since 1) you are not a trained medical professional and, 2) you didn’t examine Boss. I know all signs point to a concussion, but sometimes things aren’t always what they seem to be. Still, thanks for the information. Certainly not enough seems to be devoted to this topic.
Pat, at times it looks as if Bill Sheridan is not comfortable on the sideline. We know he would rather be up in the coaches box because it allows him to see everything developing better. Do you think Coughlin will allow him to go back to the coaches box so he can get in his comfort zone? – Mitchell F.
Good question Mitchell. I don’t know what the answer is, bu it might be worth asking at some point if things continue to be out of whack.
I dk about anyone else but im so tired on Arron Ross and him having a "strained quad" for like half the season. man up, ive been a three sport athlete and it never took me that long to heel. These guys need to start acting like their worth. – Matthew E.
If you’re going to criticize someone, at least get his injury correct. Then when you get your medical degree and have actually examined the guy, let me know what you think.
