It seems like every week another team is wearing a throwback uniform. this year has to be the most ever used. teams are wearing them repeatedly. what is the rule regarding throwbacks? and the main question, why don’t the giants ever use one? throw away those red things, and bring back the superbowl uniforms for a game. – Vick S.
Vick, I think this question was already asked in this forum. If I remember correctly, the Giants aren’t wearing a throwback this year, but plan to next year.
And now for the vents/rants…
Whether you're ready to admit it or not, the sky is officially falling. Now I'm not saying that the team will lose every game remaining on the schedule or that they won't make the playoffs...anything is still possible. However, one thing is certain, they are on a downward spiral and they are going nowhere fast.
This is a talented team. This is a good football team and unfortunately they are being held back by the coaching staff at this time.
Let's start on the offensive side of things. I've tolerated Gilbride aka “Killdrive” because we won a Super Bowl with him, but with that said, his game plans leave a lot to be desired. He is so predictable and he continually abandons the run game way too early. Jacobs is finally running well and he gives him 11 carries?? It seems that when he should run he chooses to pass and when he should pass he chooses to run.
TT2 sets up the offense inside the 5 with a 1st and goal and he calls three straight runs...even after a holding call. I don't get it. You have to try and put 6 on the board at a time like that. Running an extra 20 seconds off the clock is not worth settling for a FG and going up by 6.
And now on to the defense. They flew around more tonight and generally played better BUT the Chargers also left plays out there with two big drops by Gates. I have tried to give Sheridan the benefit of the doubt. I've tried to give him time to get his game plans together but it's clear he's in over his head. He was given a proven system and talented players and has failed miserably at getting this defense to do what it was able to do under Spags.
And please don't talk to me about injuries to Boley, Canty, Ross or anyone else. Spags lost Osi. He had Chase, Pierce and Clark at LB. He had Butler at safety. A good coordinator is able to hide deficiencies in the defense through his game planning and play calling. Sheridan is not adjusting quickly enough. And while he was a tad bit better tonight what does he do at the very end of the game when the Chargers need a TD to win???? He basically goes prevent.
Let's play zone and keep them in front of us. Sorry but this is a man to man attacking defense and it made me sick to my stomach to watch that final drive. I'm not a fairweather fan nor do I normally call for someone's head mid season and I'll be honest I'm not sure what good it would do at this point. But I will say that Sheridan is not the answer and he needs to go.
Not too many positives to take home limping into the bye at 5-4. Eli is a proven winner and I'm confident that this game helped him out of his slump and he'll get going again. Please give Jacobs the ball. In the beginning of the season Jacobs was getting the carries but was not effective.
Now he's productive but not getting the carries. Gilbride, while I doubt you'll ever read this, I'll say it anyways: The New York Giants are a power running team. I understand the concept of you have to take what the defense gives you but you need to understand that sometimes you have to dictate what a team is going to do. And sometimes that means lining up our guys against their guys and saying stop us. Jacobs was running well tonight and you went away from him too early yet again. Please for the love of God get back to NY Giants football. – Josh H.

San Diego 21 Giants 20. Good teams finish it off. 1st and goal on the 4 yard line and the game was ours to win. Our defense played great except for the last 2 minutes. Giants shot themselves in the foot with 9 penalties. I counted at least 3 third and 1 where they came up short. Some encouraging signs: #25 Bruce Johnson is a keeper; Manning played well; our defense had its moments and Jacobs is starting to run much betterbut a loss is a loss is a loss. -- Barry S.

The moaning & groaning has begun because of this & that and some other thing. It's just like Mudville when Casey struck out. But, you know what? The sun WILL rise tomorrow; the course of world history will NOT be affected one single bit; and most importantly of all, my family and I will have another day to enjoy the lifes we've spent here on earth. Will I be tuning into and reading everything I can about the Giants? Of course! But, after 77 years, I hope that I can distinguish what is REALLY important and what is just things that are side issues. Finally, remember what my all-time favorite philosopher, Yogi Berra, said about sports, "It ain't over til it's over." – Jim V.

Just a slump, eh? – Nat E.

Outcoached and out played again. The Giants had this one in the books but failed to secure it. Everyone watching knew that if they didnt score a TD at the end Rivers was gonna steal it. These players arent getting coached up enough for these games. Gilbride is still making horrible calls and Sheridan has no idea what's going on out there. Change has to be coming it just has to. We need a experienced Defensive Coordinator and a new age up to speed on todays game Offensive Coordinator. Gilbride is washed up and hasnt adapted to todays game.I mean how do you not go for the endzone on that last drive. This bye couldnt have come at a better time. -- Dom M.

Wow!!!! Where to start? The Giants played better than the past few weeks, but not well enough to win. I am sure there will be many fans pointing many fingers, but I have some questions more than accusations. The players sure could have played better (penalties, mental mistakes, etc.), but I think the coaches also have some soul searching to do over this loss
Offensively -- On the first drive, why not take the penalty for first and five rather than second and six? Why did Jacobs only get 11 carries? But most importantly, why did you play not to lose after the penalty and had first down at the 14? The first call was bad, a WR screen that close to the end zone doesn't have DB's playing far enough off. Then two runs up the middle? There was too much time left (with SD timeout)to settle for a field goal. Coughlin said he was afraid of a turnover ... pretty damming comment about the offense. But so what, it would still have meant that SD had to go all the way down the field for a tying field goal or winning TD.
Defensively -- They played better, but not great. Several very bad drops by SD sure helped. But how can so many SD receivers be so uncovered? Gates caught a 30+ yard pass where he ran free forever. LT lined up as a WR and was left uncovered. And the second TD, no one accounted for the TE at all!!!! I would also like to know the wisdom of dropping Tuck into coverage on the all Pro TE twice. (By the way, one was for a first down, the other would have been but the TE dropped a wide open pass.)
And on the last drive, why have Boley playing press coverage on Sproles, who ran right by him for a big play? Finally, no pressure on Rivers on the last drive. (He said after the game that no one came close to him at all on that drive.) This looking like a lost season ... for a number of reasons, such as injuries, bad Eli, bad coaching, bad karma. Sometimes it's just the way it goes. There is absolutely no way the Giants should lose a game where they are up 3 and have the ball at the 4 with 3:15 to play.
And you know what, if you put the ball there again 10 more times, the Giants almost certainly win 9 or 10 of the games. Let's hope they come out determined after the break so we aren't talking about how they ended up 6-10 and panicky fans start calling for Coughlin's head. – Mike M.

This is not a vent - okay maybe a tad, but we WERE better this week - but coulda, woulda, shoulda. Just not good enough, which I'm afraid will be the refrain for the remainder of the season. Honestly, I've been rooting for the Giants for 56 years now and I could feel it coming with the bonehead holding penalty on the Jacobs run to the one - bet a lot of ole Giants' fans saw it coming also. We KNEW the Giants weren't going to be able to stop SD from waltzing down the field after a field goal. That's why we were screaming for Thomas to get into the endzone on the runback the play before - this year's team is mistake prone and can't convert in the clutch - we could sense that it was now or never during the return - turned out to be never.
So ... we have another one of those Dan Reeves' teams circa 95-96 on our hands; we're don't have the talent necessary to win 10-11 games but we'll make it reasonably interesting every week, and occasionally beat someone better than us (maybe Denver this year?). We'll also come close at times but give it away at the end because we're really not that good, and it shows up in crunch time. We might scare Dallas a bit on the rematch(but not Philadelphia who really has our number - again), and say win 2 more - maybe. The holes at linebacker, and the offensive line and defensive lines, which respectively, are getting old, and have injuries so they can't get pressure from the front four, and safety have finally caught up to us, and are not going to rectified this year. Got it - there's always next year -kinda got spoiled making the playoffs that last 4 years, but this is not the year. All good things end sometime.
G ive me hope. Please tell me that Bill Sheridan will be replaced ... please ... there's 7 games left and I need something to hang onto. Oh yes, if you can find it in your soul, PLEASE tell me Lawrence Tynes will be gone in 2 weeks. PLEASE ... and Jeff Feagles ... it's time - give him to the end of the year since we're not playoff bound anyway. Even at 63, I can still punt the ball farther than 40 yards. It's time Jeff - don't go out badly. Win two out of three they always say; right now our offense can get a draw - the kicking game thought is horrible and will cost us games like this afternoon; and the defense ... well, when the game is on the line, they don't have the horses to make the plays.
That's 2 to 1 - against the good guys. I'm looking forward to next year - hope the fans don't get too over the edge, because with a "restocking" via the draft we can rise again. These things tend to go in cycles - after all, look at Arizona the last two years. In two more years, we'll be pounding them like we used to. Final thought ... Tom ... Tom - please, clean house - and why oh why wasn't Greg Williams hired the moment you had a shot at him? – Gary H.
